Come, Follow Me 2022 Old Testament Resources and Insights: Genesis 28-33

I have loved studying the Old Testament so much so far this year! The discussions I have had with my family, so far have been amazing as well. I think it is because the Old Testament, testifies of Christ. We can bring Him into our discussions.

Last week, we discussed Eternal Marriage and covenants and we discussed the importance of choosing things that are the most importance.

This week, we are talking about Jacob and Rachel. We discuss the importance of covenants and building ourselves to the Lord. We see that the Lord is very aware of us in our challenges and that he never leaves us.

Throughout this blog post you will find images I create daily, which I am offering as free printables. As well as, insights and links to resources to help with individual, family and even class room study. Remember to check back throughout the week as more printables and resources are added daily.

Day 1:

I really like how in this week’s study it talks about how we can seek the blessings of God. We see this throughout the scriptures where people are seeking the Lord and blessings, sometimes in the trials, in the wilderness, and when striving to do the Lord’s will. Jacob sought the Lord’s blessings in the wilderness. Rachel and Leah both sought the Lord’s blessings in their challenges. From these scripture accounts we learn that the Lord is always mindful of us!!

To seek the Lord’s blessings it takes faithful action on our part. It takes making and keeping covenants. It takes praying to our Heavenly Father. Asking in Faith is Huge. Strengthening that relationship with our Father through meaningful prayers! Turning to our Savior and his power of the atonement.

The Lord loves us and desires to give us blessings!! If we stop and think, we will see those blessings all throughout our life.

Here’s a great talk:

Day 2:

I have really loved the focus on making and keeping covenants!! Today, we discussed Jacob’s dream about the ladder ascending up to heaven. There’s a wonderful quote by Marion G Romney, that talks about the rungs of the ladder being covenants. As we make and keep covenants with the Lord, binding ourselves to him, we are making our way up the ladder to eternal life and exaltation, qualifying to inherit all that our Father in Heaven has.

Our purpose of mortality is to become like our Father and to return to His presence to live with Him eternally. We do that by making and keeping covenants. Jacob was taught the importance of covenants, he knew it was important to marry within the covenant, and to also keep those covenants that he made.

I really love to think about how our covenants bind us to Christ. How has making and keeping covenants brought you closer to Christ & brought blessings into your life? 💕

Day 3:

I love this!! Have you ever had some negative feelings about someone & then prayed for them? Prayer can soften our own hearts 💖 I also believe that it can also help to soften others hearts as well.

We see this twice in our study this week. We see it with Jacob and Laban & we see it with Jacob and Esau, where hearts are softened and relationships mended.

I believe that our Heavenly Father is aware of struggles that happen within our families. I also believe that as we turn to Him in prayer he will be there to help us. Whether it be something we read, that inspires to take action in our life, a thought of kindness that comes to our mind, or the softening of hearts. When we sincerely pray to our Father, I know He will help us. I know because I have seen it in my own life. This article I read tonight, was exactly what I needed to read. I love when we can see the Lord’s hand in our lives 💕

Day 4:

This quote, had to be shared this week!!! As we think about Jacob, the trials, the patience & the wrestle he had, of course his name would be changed to Israel!

I love that our prophet has pointed out that Israel means one who is willing to let God prevail in their life. This is most definitely true of Jacob. He seems to be always striving to do the Lord’s will. Even when the task seemed difficult. He did it & he involved the Lord in the process, as he frequently called out to him in prayer.

We too, can let God prevail in our lives. We can strive to align our will with His. We can invite Him into our life and into the process of our challenges. I know that He is always there & will always provide us with help. ♥️

Here’s President Nelson’s talk:

Day 5:

The past couple days I have really been pondering on the relationships and conflicts between Jacob and Laban & Jacob and Esau. In both instances, hearts were softened. Why? Because Jacob turned to the Lord in prayer. He also had that Christlike love. With Laban they were able to covenant to not harm one another. With Esau, they embraced.

As I’ve thought about this, I’ve thought about what conflicts we might have in our own life & how we might use Jacob’s example of prayer, involving the Lord & Christlike love? ❤️

Christ can soften hearts. ♥️♥️♥️ Acting with kindness and love can soften hearts too 💕

Day 6:

As I have studied about these Old Testament prophets, our ancestors. I have felt a connection to them. I never really realized how much we are connected to them, we are connected through covenants. The same covenant that God made with Abraham, the Abrahamic covenant continues to be fulfilled through us. Isn’t that quite amazing to ponder on!

Yes, we might not fully understand all that which is written in the Old Testament. But we can learn from the people within its pages. From Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and their wives, we learn about the great amount of faith they each had. I loved to learn about the wrestle that Jacob had. Where he deeply sought a blessing of the Lord. Don’t we engage in a wrestle daily, as we strive to keep our covenants and to qualify for blessings? Life in itself can be a wrestle. Where we need to have faith in our Savior and all of the power that comes from His atonement ❤️ There is so much that can be applied into our lives from these scriptures and they always seem to point us to our Savior!

Here’s a great article to study, it’s the best:
