Come, Follow Me 2022 Old Testament Moses 1; Abraham 3 Resources and Insights,

It's always exciting when we come upon a new year and we begin a new study. This year we will be studying the Old Testament. I actually, enjoy studying the Old Testament, I have always been fascinated by many of the accounts of faithful men and women, who had only heard of the prophesies of the Savior's coming. Stories such as Moses, Noah, David and Daniel. Why is studying the Old Testament important? Because we are all linked together, each dispensation on time. We can be taught by the spirit as we intently study these scriptures.

This week, we will be studying from Moses and Abraham, found in the Pearl of Great Price. We are so blessed to have these scriptures to complement each other and give us a greater understanding of  who we are and God's eternal plan for us.

Throughout this blog post you will find images I create daily, which I am offering as free printables. As well as, insights and links to resources to help with individual, family and even class room study. Remember to check back throughout the week as more printables and resources are added daily.

Day 1:

I can’t believe, today starts the study of the Old Testament! I have really enjoyed studying the Doctrine and Covenants this year. I feel like I’ve gained a greater understanding of it, as well as, a greater understanding of the Prophet Joseph Smith and the early Saints and what they went through in restoring Christ’s church to the earth. I’m so grateful for this past year’s study!!

I am also excited to study the Old Testament. There are so many amazing and faith promoting stories found in the Old Testament. I found this great article by Henry B Erying about studying the Old Testament. As with all spiritual learning, it’s important that we approach it with a prayerful heart, ready to learn by the spirit. I know that as we do so, we will be able to apply the scriptures/teachings of the Old Testament into our lives ♥️

I’m planning on continuing to do my daily posts on here and my weekly Come, Follow me resources & insights blog posts. I also would love to hear from you in the comments, so we learn and study together. 😊

Here are some great resources, that I studied from today:

Day 2:

I’ve always loved the story and analogy of the ugly ducking, given by President Uchtdorf! There’s even a church video about it, that I shared with my family tonight, I’ll link it below.

Just like the ugly ducking we might not realize our divine nature and eternal destiny. Satan sure is in our face 24-7 trying to make us see ourselves as something of insignificance. But, we learn from Moses 1:4, that we are sons and daughters of God the Father. I’ve always believed that, that knowledge, knowing who we are, is one of the greatest things that we can know!! It has blessed my life immensely!!! It has helped me to overcome trials and to face temptations. It has helped me to hold myself to a higher standard, because I know that my Father in Heaven loves me and has a plan for me.

I love that Mose’s divine identity was one of the first things said to him as he spoke with the Lord!

How has the knowledge of knowing that you are a son or daughter of God, helped you in your life?

Day 3:

As I was thinking today about what I might share with my family in our Come, Follow Me discussion, about temptations and Satan. I thought about a shield.

Satan is real, he is around us, trying to deceive us and trying to get us to fall. So what things can we do to shield ourselves from his attacks? My kids said prayer. One thing that I thought of, is to keep God’s commandments. There’s a quote from Elder Stevenson, that says, “As we obey God’s commandments, we will always be led in the right way and will not be deceived.”

One way that Satan really tries to get to us, is by deception. Making bad look good and good look bad. I loved the analogy Elder Stephenson gave of the striped kitty, aka. the skunk. He told a story of his kids innocently saying that they saw a black kitty with a white stripe, but in actuality it was a skunk. What things in our lives present themselves as sweet kitties, but in actuality are skunks with unpleasant consequences. Social media, may fall into this category, or maybe the entertainment we watch, read or listen to. As we strive to keep our Father’s commandments we will have the Holy Ghost to be with us. He discerns and is a witness of truth to us. He warns us of dangers. The key is to listen and to act upon his promptings.

What things can you do in your life to shield yourself and your family from the attacks of the adversary?

Day 4:

The principle of foreordination is so intriguing to me! It’s intriguing, because I know that it’s true ♥️

I like this explanation from Bruce R McConkie, “the Lord foreordained chosen spirit children in pre-existence and assigned them to come to earth at particular times and places so that they might aid in furthering his divine will. These pre-existence appointments, made ‘according to the foreknowledge of God the Father’ (1 Pet. 1:2), simply designated certain individuals to perform missions which the Lord in his wisdom knew they had the talent and capacities to do.”

Thus we have the potential, to use our gifts and talents to fulfill certain responsibilities in furthering God’s plan. “As people prove themselves worthy, they will be given opportunities to fulfill the assignments they then received.” (Gospel Topics: Foreordination)

I have seen this in my own life, as I have seen things stated in my patriarchal blessing, come to be. Just thinking about foreordination, makes me want to live my life better, to be worthy to fulfill those assignments.

Here’s some articles I used to study:

Day 5:
-Sorry, it was New Years Eve, so I spent it with my family :)

Day 6:

Tonight, I decide to read through some of the Introductory materials in the Old Testament, Come, Follow Me manual for Individuals and Families. I really liked the section Conversion is Our Goal.

Each of us should be striving to be more converted unto Christ, to progress and change and grow towards Him. This is a daily ongoing process and a very important part of that process is the influence of the Holy Ghost in our lives.

When I used to talk to the primary children at their baptisms, right before they were to be baptized, I loved talking about the Holy Ghost. It is the most precious gift that our Heavenly Father gives us! I cherish all that the Holy Ghost is in my life. I’ve felt of His witness as I have studied and prayed. I’ve felt that uneasy warning he gives when something is wrong. I’ve felt that burning within my heart that testifies that things are right and true. I’ve been prompted as I’ve taught and shared the gospel. The influence the Holy Ghost has had on my life is profound, even life changing!

I know that as we study with our families, it’s so important to point out the Holy Ghost & teach our children to listen, to learn how the Holy Ghost speaks to them. That, “Every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.” — Moroni 7:13

Anyways, I just thought I’d point out those introductory resources & how they can aid us and our families as we begin this years study of the Old Testament.
