May Week 4 Topic: Prophets teach me to live the Word of Wisdom.
Preparation:
Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine. The most important thing is to love those you teach and to teach them by the Spirit!! Focus on building their testimonies and helping them come unto Christ! Sharing Time Instruction:
Last year I came up with two sharing time ideas that go well with this topic.
Here is the link to that Sharing Time:
2017 LDS Sharing Time Ideas for June Week 3: I obey the Word of Wisdom by eating and drinking that which is good and avoiding that which is bad. This follows that outline, with some adaptations to go with this weeks' theme.
Here's the outline for this week:
Begin Sharing Time, by explaining to the primary children that when we lived in Heaven, we had a Father, we now call him Heavenly Father or Father in Heaven. We wanted more than anything to become like Him. One way that we wanted to become like Him, is that we wanted to have a body like He does.
Our Heavenly Father loves us so much, so part of His plan was that we would come to a mortal world and gain a body.
Ask the primary children how they think they should treat these bodies, that our Heavenly Father has given us? We should take care of them.
Read the following scripture to the primary children, "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" (1 Corinthians 3:16)
Explain that Heavenly Father has given us some guidelines to help us keep our bodies healthy.
Show the primary children this week's theme poster and invite them to repeat, "Prophets teach me to live the Word of Wisdom"
Share this quote by President Monson, "In 1833 the Lord revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith a plan for healthy living. That plan is found in the 89th section of the Doctrine and Covenants and is known as the Word of Wisdom. It gives specific direction regarding the food we eat, and it prohibits the use of substances which are harmful to our bodies.
Those who are obedient to the Lord’s commandments and who faithfully observe the Word of Wisdom are promised particular blessings, among which are good health and added physical stamina."
Show the Primary children the short video, "Word of Wisdom"
Option 1
Attach to two buckets, Good and the bad labels. Put the buckets up on the table.
In a grocery bag, place the following printables: Apples, carrot, Oats, Chicken, banana, Orange, Brocoli, Beans, Exercise, Smoking/Tobacco, Drugs, Alcohol, Coffee, Tea
Explain to the primary children that for the activity. One of the primary children will come up and choose an item from the grocery bag and they will choose whether it is something that the Word of Wisdom says is good for our body or if it is something that we should avoid. (See Scripture References Below to Help the Primary children to decide if it is good or bad) If it is good for our body, then they will put it in the mouth and it will go to the good bucket. If it is bad and we should avoid it, they are going to crumple it up and through it into the garbage/bad bucket.
Continue with each item.
Close by sharing your testimony of the Word of Wisdom and how we are blessed by obeying it.
Good items:
Apple
Carrot
Bread
Chicken
banana
Orange
Broccoli
Bad items:
Smoking/Tobacco
Drugs
Alcohol
Coffee
Tea
On the floor place the fish printables on the floor. Invite a primary child to come and try and catch one of the fish. If it is a good fish, one that has a food that is good for us then we will keep it and put it up on the board. But if it is a bad fish then we will put it in the garbage bucket. (See Scripture References Below to Help the Primary children to decide if it is good or bad)
See above the list of the good and the bad.
Close by explaining to the primary children that throughout their lives they will need to make choices, the word of wisdom can help us make the choices that will keep out bodies healthy and on the right path that leads to Heavenly Father.
(All printables for both ideas can be found by clicking below. (Print 3 copies of the fish on card stock, if you are doing option 2. You will need to add a paper clip onto each fish. Then for the "fishing pole" add a magnet)
