May Week 2 Topic: The living prophet leads the Church under the direction of Jesus Christ.
Preparation:
Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine. The most important thing is to love those you teach and to teach them by the Spirit!! Focus on building their testimonies and helping them come unto Christ! (All printables for this sharing time can be found and printed by clicking the "Free Printable Download" button. They are free and can be printed and used for personal and church purposes)
Sharing Time Instruction:
For this Sharing Time, place the following pictures on the board (Family Prayer, Missionary work, Service, Partaking of the Sacrament, Study the Scriptures, Prepare for the Temple.)
Begin Sharing Time by showing the week's theme poster and inviting the primary children to repeat, "The living prophet leads the church under the direction of Jesus Christ."
Follow- up with what was taught last week. If you used our week 1 sharing time idea, explain that last week we discussed some messages that President Nelson gave to us this past General Conference. He is the prophet called to lead our church at this time and he does so under the direction of Jesus Christ.
Explain that through our prophets we receive direction on how to live our lives in a way that we can return safely back home to our Heavenly Father.
In a vase place the flowers (see the printable below, cut out the flowers and tape them onto a skewer). Explain that during General Conference we hear from the prophet and his apostles who are called as prophets, seers and revelators. On each flower is a quote from the current and some past latter day prophets and apostles. Invite a primary child up to pick one of the flowers. Read the quote and then invite them to choose the picture on the board that goes with the quote. Invite the primary child to share how they can follow the direction of the prophet.
Continue until each flower has been chosen and picture has been discussed.
Share you testimony with the primary children.
Discussion:
Family Prayer: "Family prayer is the greatest deterrent to sin, and hence the most beneficent provider of joy and happiness. The old saying is yet true: “The family that prays together stays together.”" (Thomas S. Monson) How they can follow the direction: They can encourage their own family to have family prayer and participate reverently during it.Missionary work: "Preparation for a mission is important. A mission is a voluntary act of service to God and humankind... All missionaries, younger and older, serve with the sole hope of making life better for other people." (Russell M. Nelson) How they can follow the direction: They can prepare now to serve a full time mission by keeping the commandments and saving money for a mission. They can also be a missionary now by loving their neighbors and being a good friend and example.
Service: "Our Savior teaches us to follow Him by making the sacrifices necessary to lose ourselves in unselfish service to others." (Dallin H. Oaks) How can they follow the direction: Everyday we can pray to Heavenly Father to help us know who he needs us to serve. We can look for ways to serve our families, neighbors and friends throughout the day.
Partaking of the Sacrament: "The ordinance of the sacrament makes the sacrament meeting the most sacred and important meeting in the Church." (Dallin H. Oaks) How can they follow the direction: They can prepare for the sacrament, by repenting before the take the sacrament. They can think of the Savior and their covenants as the partake of the sacrament.
Study the Scriptures: "We all need guidance through life. We obtain it best from the standard works and teachings of the prophets of God." (Russell M. Nelson) How can they follow the direction: Everyday they can read the scriptures. They can read as a family and by themselves. Younger primary children can read with their parents or older siblings.
Prepare for the Temple: "I pray that each of us will honor the Savior and make any necessary changes to see ourselves in His sacred temples." (Quentin L. Cook) How can they follow the direction: They can make the goal now to go to the temple. They can everyday try to keep the commandments and repent when they don't. They can follow the example of the Savior.
