May 2018 Scripture: “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7).
May Week 1 Topic: The living prophet leads the Church under the direction of Jesus Christ.
Preparation:
Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine. The most important thing is to love those you teach and to teach them by the Spirit!! Focus on building their testimonies and helping them come unto Christ! (All printables for this sharing time can be found and printed by clicking the "Free Printable Download" button. They are free and can be printed and used for personal and church purposes)
Sharing Time Instruction:
Begin Sharing Time by showing the primary children a picture of the current prophet, President Nelson. Invite the primary children to play a little guessing game about the prophet. They will be given two choices about a fact about a prophet, they get to choose which one they think is correct. After they guess you can tell them the correct answer.
Question 1: President Nelson plays which instrument? The piano or the guitar? Answer: The Piano
Question 2: President Nelson is a world renown, air plane pilot or heart surgeon? Answer: Heart Surgeon
Question 3: President Nelson enjoys, snow skiing or race car driving? Answer: Snow Skiing
Question 4: President Nelson has 10 children, does he have more sons or more daughters? Answer: Daughters, he has 9 daughters and 1 son
Thank the primary children to playing the guessing game to learn a little bit more about our living prophet, President Nelson.
Show the primary children the week's theme poster and invite the primary children to repeat, "The living prophet leads the church under the direction of Jesus Christ"
Explain to the primary children that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints is Jesus Christ's church, he is at the head and ultimately directs the church. Our prophet, President Nelson leads this church under the direction of Jesus Christ.
For the remainder of Sharing Time we are going to discuss some of the things from this last General Conference that our prophet, President Nelson has counseled us to do. These are messages of guidance given to us from our prophet under the direction of our Savior.
On the board place the printables facing the board, so you can not see what is on them.
Invite a primary child to come up and pick one of the papers. Read what is says on the paper. Invite the primary children to share with you what they think the Prophet's message to them is. See below possible ways to discuss each of the messages. Continue until all of the papers/messages have been discussed.
Close sharing your testimony and inviting the primary children to follow the teachings of President Nelson. Singing the last verse of the song, "Follow the Prophet".
Possible discussion:
Message 1:
Revelation for the Church, Revelation for our Lives: "One of the things the Spirit has repeatedly impressed upon my mind since my new calling as President of the Church is how willing the Lord is to reveal His mind and will. The privilege of receiving revelation is one of the greatest gifts of God to His children." (President Nelson) Discussion: The message is that we can receive revelation for our lives. If we have a question about something, we can pray to Heavenly Father. We can read the scriptures to receive answers. As we keep the commandments and live worthy of the Holy Ghost, we can receive revelation and know the things that Heavenly Father wants us to know and do.
Message 2:
"Tonight we announce a significant restructuring of our Melchizedek Priesthood quorums to accomplish the work of the Lord more effectively. In each ward, the high priests and the elders will now be combined into one elders quorum. This adjustment will greatly enhance the capacity and the ability of men who bear the priesthood to serve others." (President Nelson) Discussion: Our Prophet receives revelation for the church. The Melchizedek Priesthood quorums have been restructured so the priesthood quorum can be strengthened and members of the quorum can better serve others.Message 3:
Ministering with the Power and Authority of God: "Through a lifetime of service in this Church, I have learned that it really doesn’t matter where one serves. What the Lord cares about is how one serves... A hallmark of the Lord’s true and living Church will always be an organized, directed effort to minister to individual children of God and their families. Because it is His Church, we as His servants will minister to the one, just as He did. We will minister in His name, with His power and authority, and with His loving-kindness." (President Nelson) Discussion: The message we receive from President Nelson is the importance of serving and loving individual children of God and their families. As primary children we can serve, we can show loving-kindness. Invite the primary children to share specific examples of how they can serve someone. (for example, I know that my mom is busy and has a lot to do, I can wash the counter off for her after dinner. I can give her a hug and tell her thank you for all that she does)
Message 4:
Ministering: "Dear brothers and sisters, we constantly seek direction from the Lord on how we can help our members keep the commandments of God, especially those two great commandments to love God and our neighbors.
For months we have been seeking a better way to minister to the spiritual and temporal needs of our people in the Savior’s way.
We have made the decision to retire home teaching and visiting teaching as we have known them. Instead, we will implement a newer, holier approach to caring for and ministering to others. We will refer to these efforts simply as “ministering.”" (President Nelson) Discussion: Our prophet seeks direction from the Lord, for specific ways to lead and guide the members of the church. He asks of us to minister to each other. Which also includes caring for others.
