July 2017 Sharing Time Topic: I Choose the Right by Living Gospel Principles

July 2017 Scripture: “Wherefore, let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord” (1 Nephi 3:16).

July 2017 Song: “The Wise Man and the Foolish Man” (CS, 281)

July Week 4 Topic: Honesty is telling the truth regardless of the consequences.

Preparation:

Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine. The most important thing is to love those you teach and to teach them by the Spirit!! Focus on building their testimonies and helping them come unto Christ!

Sharing Time Instruction:

DOWNLOAD FOR 17 x 22 inch Shield

DOWNLOAD Shield in four 8 1/2 by 11 pieces, that could be pasted onto cardboard, or foam board

To begin Sharing Time, show the primary children a shield, that says honesty on it. Explain to the primary children that one way we can defend ourselves against the adversary to to always be honest.

Sometimes it takes bravery to be honest no matter what.

Show the primary children the week's theme poster (see download down below) and invite the primary children to repeat, "Honesty is telling the truth regardless of the consequences"

Explain that in the scriptures we learn of brave women and men who are honest regardless of the consequences. We can learn from their examples of how to live our own lives.

Explain to the primary children that they are going to do a little activity, to learn more about the stories of the men and women and how we can also tell the truth regardless of our consequences.

On the board on one side put the following pictures: The People of Anti-Nephi-Lehi, Queen Esther, Abinadi, Noah, Nephi. On the other side of the board place face down the scripture quotes (see free download below)

Invite a primary child to come up and turn over one of the scripture quotes. Read the quote and invite the primary children to decide which of the pictures it would go with. Discuss with the primary children what the consequences could have been for telling the truth, the bravery it took to be honest and how that person was blessed.

Also invite the primary children to think of an example in their own lives where it might be hard to be honest. Discuss with the children how they will be blessed by doing so.

See examples below.

Continue with each scripture quote card and picture, discussing each and inviting the children to share an example in their own lives.

Close by sharing your testimony on Honesty.

Scripture examples and examples in own lives of Honesty:

The People of Anti-Nephi-Lehi:

Alma 27:3,27

The people of Anti-Nephi-Lehi were honest with their covenants to Heavenly Father. The consequences could have been that they would be destroyed. But theY remained true to their covenants and did not take up their weapons. They were blessed because their children the 2000 Stripling Warriors, who had not made such a covenant were able to defend their land and their families and were kept safe. Not one of the 2000 young men lost their lives.

An example in our own lives could be staying true to our own covenants we have made with our Heavenly Father.  We can try to keep the commandments and remember the Savior. When we make mistakes we will be humble and honest and repent.

Queen Esther:

Esther 3-7  Quote has summary of Queen Esther's story

Queen Esther knew that her people the Jews were to be killed, she was courageous and honest when she went to the king, knowing that she herself could be put to death. She told the kind that she too was a Jew and asked that he protect the Jews, he could not withdrawal the decree, but made a new decree that the Jews could defend themselves, this saved many peoples lives because of her courage and honesty.

An example in our own lives is that we can be true to who we are. Sometimes we might be the only member of the church in an area, we can be honest as we are asked about our beliefs and if we are members of the church.

Abinadi:

Mosiah 17:7-10

After being put in bondage and facing death, Abinadi, stood by what he said. He would not recall his words, because they were true. Because of Abinadi's honesty, Alma heard his words and many were converted to the church because of him.

An example in our own lives could be that sometimes our beliefs or values are tested. Friends might tempt us to stray from our values, but we can stand by what we say and what we believe. We know the gospel is true and as we live what we believe we are being truthful and honest.

Noah:

Moses 8:13, 16, 23-24

Noah warned the people that there was going to be a great flood. He told the truth even though the people mocked him and were angry with him.

An example in our own lives, could be sometimes we might be afraid to the the truth, because we will be made fun of. We can have courage like Noah and be truthful. 

Nephi:

1 Nephi 16:18-31

Nephi was one that if he said he would do something, he would follow through and do it. We see this as he went and retrieved the plates from Laban. A great example of him telling the truth, regardless of the consequences is when he broke his bow. He knew his family would be angry that his bow was broke. But he told them any ways and then he went and made a new bow, humbly asked his dad where he should hunt and found them food.

An example in our own lives is sometimes we might be afraid to tell our parents when we have done something wrong, or we have broken something, afraid that they will be mad or disappointed. But we can follow Nephi's example and tell the truth and try to make things right.
