October 2016 Relief Society Visiting Teaching Message:
My Thoughts:
As a young child, I remember sitting in primary and singing the song, "Families Can Be Together Forever." How comforting it was for me know that my mom and dad, as well as my brothers would be with me forever. Isn't this what most kids desire. There family and come is their source of comfort and love.
As a young women, this took on a even greater meaning as I learned about my role not only in my family, but in preparing for my own eternal marriage and family. The temple became the focus. I dreamed of meeting my eternal companion, enter God's holy temple and being a mom myself.
Fast forward, many years later, after finding my eternal companion, being sealed in the temple and having three beautiful boys brought into our family. I was serving in the primary presidency and for our primary program we were singing, "The Family is of God". I dare you to listen to 120 plus primary children sing with all their might their testimonies of the family and not be brought to tears and touched by the spirit. The beautiful thing about this song is that it goes through and speaks of the many parts of a family.
The song begins by speaking of how each one of us is a part of God's family. It is something that we sometimes forget or maybe it is hard to even sometimes fathom. That each and every person who has been, currently is, and will be on this earth are our brothers and sister all part of our eternal family. The song further goes on to say that God sends each one of us to earth, not alone, but in families! The family is an essential part to our Heavenly Father's plan! Why??? Because our family is our support system. Our families help us to learn and grow. The family existed before mortality and it will continue to exist after mortality. The chorus of the song reinforces this as it states, "God gave us families to help us become what He wants us to be—This is how He shares His love, for the fam’ly is of God." Why do we have families?? It is because that is how our Heavenly Father shows His love for us!
The song continues on with focusing on each essential role of the family. What the father's responsibilities are, what the mother's responsibilities are and finally what the children's responsibilities are. It is a song that fills your heart with warmth and wells you eyes with tears, because it speaks of the shear importance of the family.
In a world that is so keen on morphing the family into what it thinks it should be, it is so important to understand God's definition and purposes for the family. We need to gain testimonies of this ourselves and then as the song says, "help my fam’ly remember: God gave us families to help us become what He wants us to be—This is how He shares His love, for the fam’ly is of God. "
