2016 LDS Sharing Time Ideas for May Week 2: Joseph Smith is the prophet of the Restoration.

2016 Sharing Time Outline Theme: "I Know the Scriptures Are True"

May 2016 Sharing Time Topic: The Church of Jesus Christ Has Been Restored

May 2016 Scripture: “I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Joseph Smith—History 1:17).

May 2016 Song:  “Praise to the Man,” verses 1 and 3

May Week 2 Topic: Joseph Smith is the prophet of the Restoration.
Preparation:

Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine.

Sharing Time Instruction:
Place a picture of Joseph Smith on the board and cover it up.  To begin sharing time explain that you are going to give them some clues about a person they will be discussing today. Invite them to raise their hand when they know who it is. When everyone has their hand raised and the clues are done then invite the primary children to say who it is. The clues could be as such, " This person is male. He was named after his father. He read and learned from the bible. He had a question. When he was 14 years old he prayed to Heavenly Father., etc."

Uncover the picture and show the primary children the picture of Joseph Smith, Jr.  Show the primary children the Week's Theme Poster and invite them to repeat, "Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration."  Invite the primary children to review what the word Restoration means. (It means something being brought back). The restoration we are talking about is the Restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ.  Joseph Smith is the Prophet by which Heavenly Father brought back or Restored the the Church of Jesus Christ back onto the earth.

Explain that you are going to play a matching game.  Place the matching game pieces randomly face down onto the board. Invite a primary child to come up and pick two of the cards, turn them over and see if they match. For them to match the scripture card needs to match the picture card.  The primary children will need to read the scripture to see if it matches the picture. If they match, then discuss the picture and the scripture as a group.  If they do not match then the cards will be turned back over. Invite another primary child to come up and try to match two cards. Continue in this manner until all of the cards have been matched and discussed. (Tip for Junior Primary you could have them match the colors of the pictures, then when matched, read the scripture to them and discuss the picture)

  4. This was the perfect sharing time idea, thank you! It's simple and focuses on the prophet and what he did for us. I'm excited to present it today. Thank you for your hard work and dedication in putting these together. You save all of us who do sharing time!

  5. This was a really fun activity with the kids. FYI, though, it would take longer than the allotted 15 minutes to complete. My kids are not very familiar with the Pearl of Great Price, so finding scriptures was really hard and time consuming. Definitely keep that in mind before diving in!
