Family Home Evening Staying on Course Amidst the Trials of Life {Based on the First Presidency Message for February:Landing Safely in Turbulence}

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:

Staying on Course Amidst the Trials of Life {Based on the First Presidency Message for February:Landing Safely in Turbulence}
Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest. On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

Invite a member of the family member say the prayer

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Begin, by playing the video: Men's Hearts Shall Fail Them  Discuss as a family that because we live in this carnal, mortal world we are going to experience trial and tribulations. We are going to go through the storms of life. If we are full of fear and focus on these trials they can veer us off course. But if we stay steadfast in faith, focused on the eternal plan then we will be able to safely navigate life.

As a family read, February 2016 First Presidency Message: Landing Safely in Turbulence. Discussed this message as a family. Give each member of the family a piece of paper invite them to write or draw on it some storms or trials we might face in line.  Invite family members to share these with the rest of the family. Find somewhere in your home you could use as a runway. (Halls make great runways ;)). Place these storms/trial papers outside of the runway, such as in doorways or on walls. At the end of the runway place a picture of the Savior.

Give each family member another piece of paper, on it invite them to write or draw somethings they can do to focus on their Savior and His gospel, things they can do to stay on the runway/or course to eternal life.  Invite family members to share what they have written or drawn.

Then help each family member make these papers into paper airplanes.
{See Below how to build an airplane}

Once each airplane is made, take them to the runway. Invite the family members one at a time to point their airplane down the runway to the picture of the Savior and throw their airplane down the runway. Discuss as a family the importance of keeping focused on the Savior.  Express the importance of helping each other stay safely on the runway.

Close with a Family Prayer.

How to Build an Airplane
Get a piece of 8 1/2 by 11 paper

Fold it in half length-wise

Open it back up and fold the top two corners into the center.

Then fold it down.

Fold the top two corners in, to meat each other.

Fold the little triangle piece up.

Then fold in half, outward.

Next, you will fold the top flaps down on each side so they a line with the bottom.

It will look as such with the two sides folded down.

Open the sides up a little bit. Grasp the bottom of the plane and through it :)
