Family Home Evening on the The Scriptures are the Word of God

I decided that it would be fun to have the last FHE of the month be a review of the month's theme in primary. This could also be done the first week of the following month.  This will give the kids an opportunity to help teach and to share what they have learned and a great reminder/refresher for the rest of the family.  Primary is all about the basics and sometimes as youth and adults we need to get back to those basics :)

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:

The Scriptures are the Word of God (Review of January's Primary Theme)

Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest. On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

Invite a member of the family member say the prayer

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Begin by asking your family, how God communicates with them, how we receive instruction from him?  Answers might include, through prayer, through the Holy Ghost, through the scriptures, by prophets, etc.

Show your family the Standard Works (Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price) Invite family members to share with you what each one is.  For example a family member could tell about the Book of Mormon, that it is records of the people in ancient America, such as Nephi, Alma and Mormon. That these records were called the Gold Plates and were hid up until Heavenly Father wanted them to come forth. The prophet Joseph Smith translated these Gold Plates, with special power from Heavenly Father, into the Book of Mormon that we have today. Continue discussing each book. (You could show pictures of scripture stories from these books, or invite family members to share some of their favorite scripture stories. They could even draw pictures of their favorite scripture stories and share them.)

Ask your family what all of these books have in common?  Explain that they all contain inspired words and revelation from God to his prophets, for his people.

Discuss ways to study the scriptures with your family. Remind them the words to the song, "Search, Ponder, and Pray" Explain that as we ponder over the scriptures we will receive personal revelation, receive guidance and have a better understanding of our Heavenly Father's will. The best way is to apply the scriptures into our own lives.

Play the following video: The Blessings of the Scriptures  Discuss with your family, the price that others paid for us to have these instructions from God. Discuss and make goals as a family in regard to scripture study, both family scripture study and individual scripture study. Write them on the paper below and display them where you and your family will be reminded of them often.

Close by playing, "Scripture Power"

Close with a Family Prayer.
