Can you believe this is made from a Cereal Box! Christmas Tree Tutorial

I wanted to make a tree for the Sharing Time lesson ideas for December Week 2, this is what I came up with! It makes even a cute decoration or fun table center piece for Christmas parties!!


Here is what you need:

• Empty Cereal Box
• Empty can (I used a metal Diamond Nut can)
• Dry Rice
• Muslin
• Ribbon
• Buttons
• Scrapbook paper or you can download the Paper Christmas Tree Printable
• Glue Stick
• Hot glue gun and glue sticks
• Scissors
• Paper Cutter
• Ruler
• Pencil
• Star Template {free download}
• Sand Paper and Ink

Here is the HOW to:

First, you will need to cut out the trunk part of the tree. The measurement for this is at least 11 inches (it could be 12 inches) by 2 inches. I just cut this out with scissors. Then I marked half way in the middle, so each side is 1 inch, drew a line down the center with my ruler and use the ruler to help me fold it, you could also use a bone folder to help with the folding.

Then, using the hot glue gun glue place glue in the inside. So it is just one piece that measures 11 in x 1 in.  Also, cute out some craft paper or paper bag 11 in x 2 in. You will then glue this onto the cereal box piece with a glue stick.

When it is glued on then you can distress the edges with some distressing ink or brown ink.

Next, cut the rest of the cereal box pieces out. They will measure as follows:

• 2 in x 2 1/2 in
• 2 in x 3 1/2 in
• 2 in x 4 1/2 in
• 2 in x 5 1/2 in

Also cut the star out of the cereal box by tracing the star template and cutting out with scissors.

Then, cut the same measurements out of scrapbook paper. Glue the pieces of scrapbook paper onto the cereal box. I glued it onto the side with the writing on it, so the other side would just be the brown cardboard. Then sand all the edges and distress with ink.

Also, cut the star out of scrapbook paper. Then glue it onto the cereal box star cut out. Also distress.

Fill the can with dry rice.

Cut a piece of muslin so it can be pulled up around the can. Mine measured 14 in by 14 in. Your measurement may differ depending on the can you use.

Assembly Time!!  First, place a strip of hot glue down the center of the 2 x 2 1/2 piece and glue it onto the trunk piece (about 3/4 of an inch from the top). Then, place glue down the center of the 2 x 3 1/2 in piece and glue it onto the trunk below the first piece. Continue with the next two pieces.  Then place a little glue on the star and add it to the top. Next you will place the tree into the container. This is where it would be better if it was like 12 inches, mine seemed a little short. I placed it in, pulled the fabric up around it and tied on the ribbon. Tie it tight, so it won't come out. Last, embellishment time! Hot glue on some buttons to give it an ornament look.
