I thought I would share some ideas, some I have shared in the past as well as some new ones.
How to prepare for General Conference:
Prepare for General Conference??? Why would someone do such a thing??? Well, here are my thoughts.... during General Conference we have the opportunity to hear from the leadership of the church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). With that we are also able to receive personal revelation, that can bless our lives as well as our family. If I was attending a class on learning how to operate a space ship and I was about to go to space, you better believe I would want to prepare myself for that class, so I could receive all the direction I would need to pilot the ship and be safe. Same with life, we have the opportunity to be instructed to receive guidance and direction to help us navigate safely through this life. So, how can we prepare??? Here are some ideas...
I love to have a Family Home Evening about preparing for General Conference, this allows us as a family to prepare. Here are some FHE ideas:
Some Sharing Time Outline Ideas that could be converted into a fun Family Home Evening:
- The prophet speaks to us at general conference.

Preparing myself.... I also feel that it is important to prepare myself. I do this by pondering the things that I have questions about, or the specific things I need help with in my life. I pray, I read my scriptures and I come General Conference day ready to be instructed and expecting to receive inspiration or personal revelation. I also love to take notes during conference and to write down any inspiration I receive. I usually do this in a note book.

When General Conference is here, how to get the most out of it:
Yay! You have prepared and the day is here. So how do you get the most out of General Conference, especially with little kiddos around, who might get restless?? My kids actually get kind of excited for General Conference. They know what is expected and what they get to do during conference. Have a plan and make sure everyone is on board or aware of the plan. Make it fun. As I said I take notes. My kids, I usually have something that they can do, whether it be a General Conference Bingo, activity page, etc. I had a friend suggest last conference that I make some pages where the kids could draw a picture of the person speaking. So... I have included this below. Below are a few ideas to help keep the kids attention and to help them also absorb some of what is said. The thing I found that works great is to discuss the talks with them, maybe during the songs or after the session. Ask them what they learned.
New for this Conference, General Conference drawing/color sheets:
General Conference Bingo : Attach a small package of spacers (small cereals, candy, etc.)
Reverse General Conference Bingo
General Conference Activity Sheet

NEW!!! Worksheet for 2015:
Now, that you have received that direction and guidance, now what??? After conference I love to have a FHE about one of the talks. My children love this. Here are examples of some of them we have done in the past.
- General Conference April 2015: A Focus on Elder Holland's Talk
- Family Home Evening on Standing for the Right
- Family Home Evening on Oct. 2014 General Conference Talk by Elder Ballard "Stay in the Boat and Hold on!"
I like to read through my notes, decide on things I need to take action on, develop a plan and follow through. To tell ya the truth I also, like to re-listen or read through talks that really appealed to me. Sometimes when we listen again or read through it we pick up on things we may have missed out on when listening to it the first time.
What a great group of resources for General Conference! I like that you have something for lots of different age groups, very helpful, thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks Rachael :)
