September 2015 Sharing Time Topic: I Obey Jesus Christ Because I Love Him
September 2015 Scripture: “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15).
September Week 1 Topic: I show love for Jesus Christ when I keep the commandments.
Free Printables: (Printing Tip: Click on image to open and then save image to your computer. You can then print the image from your computer.)
Preparation:
Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine.
Sharing Time Instruction:
Begin sharing time by showing the primary children the picture of the heart with the Savior. Ask the following question, "How do we show our LOVE for Jesus Christ?" Invite the primary children to share their answers. On the board write the following scripture, "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15). Invite the primary children to repeat that scripture with you.
Show the children the weeks theme poster and invite the children to repeat, "I show love for Jesus Christ when I keep the commandments."
Before primary place the above "Ten Commandment" printables face down on the board, in preparation to play a memory game. Explain to the primary children that on the board are papers which have the ten commandments on them. Invite a child to come up and choose two of the ten commandment papers. If they match you will set them aside on the board and discuss that commandment and invite another child to come up and choose two card. If they do not match, then you will turn the cards back over and invite another child to come up and choose two cards. Continue until all commandments have been matched and discussed, or until time runs out.
Close by sharing your testimony on the topic.
THE 10 COMMANDMENTS (Ideas for discussion):
1- Thou shalt have no other Gods before me. Discussion could include: Discuss with the children that whenever we make something more important in our lives then our Heavenly Father, then we are "having other God's before us". To keep this commandment we need to put him first in our lives.
2- Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. Discussion could include: Discuss with the children that "grave images" include when we place extreme importance on money and objects. When we love things more than God.
3- Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Discussion could include: Discuss with the children that when we use Heavenly Father's name in an irreverent name then we are using His name in vain. This also includes any form of swearing.
4- Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Discussion could include: Discuss with the children that we have 6 days throughout the week that we can do what ever we would like to do. But on the seventh day, the sabbath day, we are to commit this day to our Heavenly Father. It should be a day that we strive to grow closer to Him. Discuss ways that the children can keep the sabbath day holy.
5- Honour thy father and thy mother. Discussion could include: Discuss with the children that when we honor our mother and father we obey them, love them, respect them and serve them. We honor our earthy parents as well as our heavenly parents as we keep the commandments.
6- Thou shalt not kill. Discussion could include: Discuss with the children that life is so precious to our Heavenly Father, it is the most precious gift He has given us.
7- Thou shalt not commit adultery. Discussion could include: Discuss with the children that a precious gift that Heavenly Father has given us is to create life. He asks us to keep our minds and bodies clean and chaste.
8- Thou shalt not steal. Discussion could include: Discuss with the children that when we take something without paying for it then that is stealing. It is a form of dishonesty and destroys our character.
9- Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Discussion could include: Discuss with the children that "bearing false witness" includes lying. We want to be honest in our lives and with our dealings with others, so we will be trustworthy.
10- Thou shalt not covet. Discussion could include: Discuss with the children, that coveting means that we desire something that someone else has. When we let the our desires for what others have consume us it will only lead us to unhappiness.
10 commandments can be found in Exodus 20:3-17. Here is a great source in explaining these commandments: Ten Commandments
