Preparation:
Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine.
Sharing Time Instruction:
Before primary, write on the board,
"Through a still small voice, the Spirit speaks to me
To guide me, to save me from the evil I may see.
If I try to do what's right, he will lead me thru the night,
Direct me, protect me, and give my soul his light.
Listen, listen. The Holy Ghost will whisper.
Listen, listen to the still small voice." (words from "The Still Small Voice", Children's Songbook pg 106. Music and Text by Merrill Bradshaw, 1929-2000.
*** red writing will be the correct word strips***
Place the word strips on the board.
Begin, Sharing Time by explaining to the children that you are going to play a song. Tell them that they will need to listen very closely, to the words, so they can help you fill in the blanks on the board. Play the song, "The Still Small Voice", play it loud enough for the children to reverently listen to it, but not too loud.
When the song is over, invite those who listened reverently and think they know where the words go, to come up and help, one word at a time.
Ask the children HOW the Spirit speaks to us? (In a still small voice)
Whisper an instruction to the children, such as, "everyone stand-up, spin once around, fold your arms and sit down." Ask the primary children WHAT they needed to do to HEAR the instruction? (They had to listen carefully.)
Show the children the week theme poster and invite them to repeat, "The Holy Ghost speaks in a still, small voice."
Show the children the picture of Lehi and the Liahona. Ask the children if they know what the little ball is that Lehi is holding. Explain to them that it is the liahona, that the liahona was a gift that Heavenly Father gave Lehi and his family for guidance and direction as long as they were faithful and righteous. Ask the children to listen closely as you tell them a story of the liahona. Tell or read the story found in 1 Nephi 16:18:32. When you are done with the story, ask they children, "What did Nephi do when his bow broke?" (He made a new one and ask his father where he should go to hunt) What did Lehi and his family have to do to receive the guidance of the liahona? (They had to be humble, righteous and faithful.) Next invite them to share how receiving direction from the Holy Ghost is like receiving direction from the liahona? (We need to be humble, living righteously and being faithful to hear the promptings of the spirit)
What did the song say the Holy Ghost will do?? (Guide us, Save us, Lead us, Direct us, Protect us, and give our Souls His light.)
Close by sharing your testimony on listening to the still small voice and invite the primary children to live their lives each day so they can hear the whispering direction of the Holy Ghost.
