"Do You Understand How Important You are?"

Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest. On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Begin by putting a puzzle together as a family. This could be any kind of puzzle you have, it could even be a picture you have cut up into pieces. The key is to put one piece of the puzzle away, do not include it with the rest of the pieces and do not let your family know that there is a missing piece.  When the puzzle has been put together (all except for the missing piece), show your family the missing piece.  Ask your family how important that piece is to the completion of the puzzle?  Invite your family to share their feelings and thoughts about how the puzzle pieces could be likened to all of God's children.  Thoughts might include, that just as each puzzle piece has equal importance and is necessary to the completion of the puzzle. So are each of God's children.  We are each important to our Heavenly Father and to His eternal plan.

Invite your family members to cup their hands near their eyes to create blinders.  Point out that when we put blinders on that it narrows our vision, we can not see the whole picture. We miss out on important parts.  When we take our blinders off we are able to see so much more.  It is the same way as we view others.  We can look at others and not see the whole picture, the best parts, because we are looking at them with blinders on.  But when we remove the blinders and see others as our Heavenly Father sees them, we recognize things and see amazing parts of that person.  Invite your family to try to see each other as well as all of God's children the way He sees them.

Sit in a circle as a family.  Toss a bean bag to one of your family members, explain that when the bean bag is tossed to them they need to say something positive and good about the family member who tossed it to them. Continue to do this until everyone has had something nice said about them and has said something nice about someone else.  Now toss it again and this time the person who receives the bean bag need to recognize something within them self that is positive and good.  For example (I think Heavenly Father has given me the talent to have sympathy and empathy for another.  or I think I have been blessed to be able to be a hard worker and a desire to do my best. etc. )

Thank family members for participation and remind them to continue to recognize that they are of great worth to their Heavenly Father, as is all of His children. Show the picture of the flower. Explain the uniqueness of the flower and the beauty of it. It is not like all of the other flowers, but has reached it's potential and is beautiful! Explain that we can also reach our full potential. As we see our self the way our Heavenly Father sees us and as we strive to work together with all of His children, to lift each other, and help to create that "grand symphony" or the 'beautifully completed puzzle"!

Close by sharing your testimony.

Close with a Family Prayer.
