For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:

Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest. On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Invite each family member to listen very carefully to what you are about to say. Explain that after you have said the word, you would like them to share with everyone the first thing that comes to their mind.  Say the word, "COURAGE".  Invite family members one at a time to say what comes to their mind when they hear the word courage.

Read the following First Presidency Message as a family: President Monson Calls for Courage, April 2015 Ensign

Explain that as you think of courage it is hard to not think about the courage of soldiers, those who fight for freedom and to help those who are oppressed.  We live in a world where each one of us is at war, a spiritual war.  Satan and his hosts are on the opposing side, they are trying their hardest to destroy us.  He is very cunning and sometimes makes things that are bad seem good and things that are good seem bad or unpopular.  He plagues us with fear of not being accepted, fear of ridicule, fear of not being liked, etc. What we need to realize is that we are on the winning team.  Our Heavenly Father and Savior are the generals of our army, with them all things are possible and we can not lose.  We need to have the type of courage that President Monson speaks about.  The courage to stand up for what we know is right, the courage to have integrity, "The Courage to say no, the courage to say yes".  As we stand firm with courage our testimony will grow, we will be strengthened and receive the power to resist the cunning assaults of the adversary.

Invite family members to play a game of FHE Courage Battleship.  To set up for the game, use two chairs and a bed sheet.  Place chairs a couple feet away from each other. Drape the sheet over the chairs.

To Play:  Divide family into two teams.  Give each team, two 3 point boats and two 2 point boats.  Invite each team to place their boats anywhere on their side of the sheet.  (Also ask them to not look try to look and see what is on the other side) Using a dice, let each team roll to determine who will go first.  The team the rolls the highest number will get to go first.  Ask a question from the list below to the team going first.  If their answer is sufficient/correct then they can toss the bean bag over the sheet to the other side, trying to sink one of the opposing teams battle ships.  If the bean bag, hits any part of the ship then the ship is sunk and the team that sunk it receives the amount of points the ship is. If the question is not answered correctly then the opposing team has a chance to try to answer the question. If they answer it correctly then they get to toss the bean bag over. If they do not answer correctly then they do not get to toss it over. Continue asking questions alternating to each side until one sides ships are completely sunk.  Tally up the points if you'd like ;)

Questions for FHE Courage Battleship: (some questions are situations in which the team will need to give a response that shows courage)

  1. You are riding in a car with some of your friends.  Your friends have been playing some of their favorite music. Most of which is enjoyable to listen to. Everyone is having a fun time. A song comes on that has some very inappropriate language. You get uncomfortable listening to it, WHAT DO YOU DO?

  10. (The remainder of questions will have to do with reading a scripture and providing an answer as to who the person is that showed courage)  "But, exerting all my powers to call upon God to deliver me out of the power of this enemy which had seized upon me, and at the very moment when I was ready to sink into despair and abandon myself to destruction—not to an imaginary ruin, but to the power of some actual being from the unseen world, who had such marvelous power as I had never before felt in any being—just at this moment of great alarm, I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me." (Joseph Smith- History 1:16) (answer: Joseph Smith)
  11. "...a Lamanite, came into the land of Zarahemla, and began to preach unto the people. And it came to pass that he did preach, many days, repentance unto the people, and they did cast him out, and he was about to return to his own land. 3 But behold, the voice of the Lord came unto him, that he should return again, and prophesy unto the people whatsoever things should come into his heart. 4 And it came to pass that they would not suffer that he should enter into the city; therefore he went and got upon the wall thereof, and stretched forth his hand and cried with a loud voice, and prophesied unto the people whatsoever things the Lord put into his heart." (Helaman 13:2-4) (Answer: Samuel the Lamanite)
  12. "All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions." This person knowing of the decree still knelt down and prayed to God. (Daniel 6:7) (Answer: Daniel)
