Preparation:
Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine.

Sharing Time Instruction:

Invite the primary children to imagine that they were going to go on a long hike.  It was necessary that they take this hike. It was going to be high in the mountains in an area they had never been to before.  The destination their hike led to was a place of incredible beauty, somewhere they really wanted to reach. What would they need to bring with them to keep them safe on their hike?  Invite the primary children to share some answers.  Ask the children if they think it might be a good idea to have a "guide" come along with them.  Someone who could help them find the way and provide them with a safe journey?

Explain that because our Heavenly Father loves us so much He has given us "guides" to give us directions and guidance from our Heavenly Father.  Place some pictures of Latter-day prophets on the board.  Ask the primary children if they know who the "guides" are?  (Answer: Prophets)  Show the primary children the week's theme poster and invite them to repeat, "There is safety in following the prophet".

Explain that as we listen and follow the guidance that the prophets give us we will safely stay on the path that will lead us back to our Heavenly Father's presence.

Invite a primary child to come up and pick one of the pictures of the prophets.  Read what special guidance the prophet has given and invite the primary children to share how they believe that, that guidance can help keep them safe.

Continue with each prophet.

If there is extra time, invite the children to share other guidance they have heard prophets give that can help them return safely home to their Heavenly Father.

Close by sharing your testimony about following the prophets.

  1. So simple and yet interesting enough to keep their attention! I'm going to bring my son's little outdoor kit and a few other little props in a "safety backpack" to get started. Love the Prophets' quotes and the whole lesson idea. Thank you!!

    1. Hi Chelsea, my hubby Mike and Jed were companions on their missions! Its fun seeing your comment on here! I'd like to use your idea along with this lesson but I'm not sure what to including in a "safety backpack". Any suggestions? I was thinking along the lines of putting in my scriptures, but I'm not sure what types of items I could use for prayer, church, etc. What are you putting in your backpack? Thanks!!
