A St. Patrick's Day Family Home Evening (Promises, Service & Blessings)...

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:

A St. Patrick's Day Family Home Evening

Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest. On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

Invite a member of the family member say the prayer

Sing: "When I Am Baptized", Children's Songbook page 103

Follow-up with last weeks FHE.

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Ask your family what they know about St. Patrick's Day.  Share with them these fun facts:

Why is it called St. Patrick's Day?:  St. Patrick was a Christian missionary. He traveled Ireland spreading the Christian word.

Why Lucky Clovers/Shamrocks?:  It is said that St. Patrick often referred to a three leaf clover as he explained the concept of Trinity- The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost.

What about Rainbows, Leprechauns and Pots of Gold?: Leprechauns are said to be little elf like people who live alone in the woods and make shoes.  It is also said that they hide their pots of gold at the end of rainbows.  It has also been said that if you catch a leprechaun he will take you to his pot of gold and will have to share some with you.

What else do we know about rainbows and gold?
Show your family a picture of Noah's arch and tell the story as found in Genesis 9:8-17. Discuss with your family the importance of rainbows and their representation of our Heavenly Father's promise. Discuss some promises that we make with Heavenly Father and why it is important to keep our promises. (ex. promises made at our baptism)

Show the video: "Flecks of Gold".  After the video discuss that as we keep our promises and as we serve others with love, we will be blessed with a happy life, more precious than any pot of gold!

To Print: Click on Image and save it to your computer. Then open and print.

Give each family member the rainbow printable.  Invite each family member to color their picture and on each line of the rainbow write a promise that has been or can be made with Heavenly Father.  Then on the Pot of Gold write ideas of how they can serve others.

Here are some additional activities you could do...

Close by sharing your testimony.

Close with a Family Prayer.
