May 2014 Scripture: “Be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets” (2 Peter 3:2).
May 2014 Week 4 Topic: The prophet speaks to us at general conference.
Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine.
Identify the doctrine: Prepare the questions about President Monson to ask the children. Gather pictures of President Monson, the Conference Center and King Benjamin.
Help the Children Understand the Doctrine: Make a crown. (see printable below) Prepare to read account of King Benjamin.
Help them apply the doctrine in their lives: Prepare to give Senior Primary President Monson's General Conference Talk, and Junior primary part of the talk. See printable pages below.

Crown printable. This should fit a smaller head. If you need it bigger print out another sheet. It's best if printed out on card stock. Cut it out and tape them together, to fit to the child's head.
Copy of President Monson's Talk for Senior Primary. (The wording is very small, so I could fit the talk onto one page. For the actual talk visit this link, Love-the Essence of the Gospel.)
Printable for Junior Primary.
Sharing Time Instruction:
Begin sharing time by explaining to the primary children that you are going to tell them some things about a person and that you would like them to stand up when they think they know who the person is. Use the following clues:- This person was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on August 21, 1927.
- This person raised prize winning pigeons.
- This person graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Business Management.
- This person served in the United States Navy near the close of World War II.
- This person was married in the Salt Lake City Temple.
- This person has eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
- This person was ordained as an apostle when he was only 36 years old.
- This person is the 16th President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
(The above clues were gathered from the following resourses: Thomas S. Monson President of the Church and General Authorities President Thomas S. Monson)
Show them a picture of President Monson and ask the children if they can tell you who the person is in the picture. Have everyone say President Monson. Thank all of the children for their participation. Explain that President Monson leads our church and is the current prophet. Further explain, that Heavenly Father speaks to us through President Monson.
Hold up a picture of the Conference Center, ask the children to raise their hand if they know what the building is. Call on one of the children to give you the answer. Explain that during General Conference the prophet speaks to us from the Conference Center.
Have the children repeat, "The prophet speaks to us at general conference."
Invite a child to come up and place a grown on his head and ask him to hold the picture of King Benjamin. Explain that long ago King Benjamin was a prophet, we read about him in the Book of Mormon. Read: Mosiah 2: 1, 5-8.
Explain that what happens today at General Conference is similar to what happened back in King Benjamin's time. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gather together to listen to the prophet. Some people attend the Conference Center, but there are so many members that everyone could not fit in the conference center. So, we are able to watch conference on the television or internet and listen to it on the radio. Even then some do not have access to those resources. The talks are also written and put on the internet and printed in the Ensign and Liahona Magazines. Just like King Benjamin's speech was written down so everyone would be able to read it, so are our current prophet's speeches.
In Senior Primary, have the child with the crown invite a couple other children to help hand each child a copy of President Monson's Talk from the April 2014 General Conference, "Love—the Essence of the Gospel". Invite each child to go home, pray to Heavenly Father before they read the talk, asking him to help them to know what he would have them know and understand from the talk. Then ask them to read the talk, highlighting or underlining words that stick out to them. Then have them write on the bottom or the back of the paper what they felt Heavenly Father wanted them to learn from the talk given by President Monson. Encourage the children to then apply the instruction into their lives and act on the words spoken.
In Junior Primary, have the child with the crown hand each child one of the papers from the printable above. Read it to them and ask them what they think Heavenly Father wants us to learn from the words. Encourage the children to think of ways throughout the week that they can serve and love those around them. How they could show love to their family.
Close by sharing your testimony on the weeks topic.
