Preparation:
Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine.
Identify the doctrine: Children have the responsibility to obey their parents. Easter (Jesus Obedience to His Father) Prepare to sign the song, "Quickly I'll Obey", Children's Song book pg. 197. Print the word poster, "Children have the responsibility to obey their parents."
Help the Children Understand the Doctrine: Before hand prepare the eggs for the egg hunt (see printables below). Egg preparation: Cut eggs out, cut scripture cards out. Tape or Glue the coordinating scripture card onto the back of the egg. Place them around the room. Plan on discussing how Jesus was the perfect example to us by showing obedience to his father.
Help them apply the doctrine in their lives: Prepare to discuss with them that each member of a family has a responsibility and that the children's responsibility is to obey their parents. Plan on asking children what are some things that they can do to be obedient.
Sharing Time Instruction:
Begin sharing time by singing, "Quickly I'll Obey", Children's Song book pg. 197. Go over the words with the kids first and then sing the song. Ask the children it says, their responsibility is in the song? Answer: To Quickly Obey! Put the word poster on the board, "Children have the responsibility to obey their parents." Have the children repeat it with you. Ask a child to read, Colossians 3:20 "Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord."Explain that as part of a family we each have responsibilities. Explain that we learned in the prior week that parent's responsibilities are to be good examples and teach their children the gospel. To raise their children in love and righteousness. As part of a family children also have responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is to obey their parents. Explain that when we obey our parents then we are helping our parents fulfill their responsibilities. When everyone does their job, then everyone is happy!
Explain that Jesus was a great example to us of being obedient. Explain that he obeyed his father, in all things. Explain that the atonement showed us his strict obedience to his Heavenly Father's plan.
Explain that since it is Easter Sunday we are going to go on an egg hunt. Explain that you have placed paper eggs around the room, you will invite a child to go and find a particular egg, but you will only choose those who are sitting reverently. Explain that on these eggs is the story of the atonement and resurrection. Ask a child to go and find the egg that says #1. Have the child show everyone what is on the other side of the egg, read what it says on the egg. Discuss that Jesus showed obedience to his father as he said, "...nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." (Matt 36:49) Ask a child what is one way they can show obedience to their parents. Make sure you thank each child as they participate. Explain that when we partake of the sacrament it reminds us of the atoning sacrifice that Jesus made for each one of us. Have someone find the egg that says #2. Have the child show everyone what is on the other side of the egg, read what it says on the egg. Explain that when Judas did this it fulfilled the prophecy in Zechariah 11:12-14, that Jesus would be sold for 30 pieces of silver. Have someone find the egg that says #3. Have the child show everyone what is on the other side of the egg, read what it says on the egg. Have someone find the egg that says #4. Have the child show everyone what is on the other side of the egg, read what it says on the egg. Explain that the soap, signifies Pilate washing his hands of Jesus' death. Have someone find the egg that says #5. Have the child show everyone what is on the other side of the egg, read what it says on the egg. Explain that they did all of these things to mock him. Have someone find the egg that says #6. Have the child show everyone what is on the other side of the egg, read what it says on the egg. Explain that they crucified Jesus, meaning they nailed him to the cross. You may want to bring a nail to show them. Have them imaging what it might feel like to have a nail, nailed through their hands, wrists and feet. Have someone find the egg that says #7. Have the child show everyone what is on the other side of the egg, read what it says on the egg. Have someone find the egg that says #8. Have the child show everyone what is on the other side of the egg, read what it says on the egg. Have someone find the egg that says #9. Have the child show everyone what is on the other side of the egg, read what it says on the egg. Explain that the rich man Joseph must have had so much love for Jesus, to care for his body and place it in his own tomb. Have someone find the egg that says #10. Have the child show everyone what is on the other side of the egg, read what it says on the egg. Have someone find the egg that says #11. Have the child show everyone what is on the other side of the egg, read what it says on the egg. Have someone find the egg that says #12. Have the child show everyone what is on the other side of the egg, read what it says on the egg. Show a picture of the resurrected Christ: here is a great picture. You may want to also have a plastic egg and open it showing that their is nothing inside the egg, just as the tomb was empty after Christ's resurrection.
Bear your testimony about Christ's atonement and resurrection, his example of obedience to his father and how important it is to fulfill the responsibility of obeying their parents.
