Scripture: D&C 25:12 "12 For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads."

Then show the video about Marissa found here  lds.org/go/323.

Discuss how we feel when we listen to the music sung during church.  Does it bring in the spirit?  Why do you think we sing a hymn before we partake of the sacrament?  It is because it prepares us for that sacred ordinance.  Music touches our souls in such a deep way.  We should only choose songs that will invite the spirit.

Have each family member choose their favorite hymn or primary song.  Then play the song.  You can find all hymns and primary songs at this link https://www.lds.org/music?lang=eng.

Discuss why these songs are their favorite songs and how they feel as they listen and sing them.

Another great idea would be to play, name that tune.  Play the prelude to the song and have family members guess what song it is.

When we sing the hymns and primary songs we are singing praises unto our Heavenly Father. We should sing them with love, praise and reverence.  I believe our Heavenly Father loves to hear us sing and that it doesn't matter to him if we are not the best singer. He wants to hear those praises.  Playing a musical instrument is also a way we can display our praise, love and gratitude to our Heavenly Father.

Let each family member choose their flavor of ice cream and toppings.  Neapolatin ice cream is great because you have the chocolate, vanilla and strawberry to choose from.  Yummy toppings could be: crushed cookies, candy pieces, strawberries, bananas  caramel  chocolate sauce, hot fudge, nuts, whipped cream, cherries, etc.

General Conference Bingo- Free printable

For our primary kids we are giving them these bingo cards with some candy attached.  I'm not sure the candy will make it home, let alone until conference, though.  We printed them on different colors of paper, just in black and white.  If you are just doing it for your kiddos at home it might be fun to do it colored on card stock.

The idea is that they listen to conference and when they hear one of the above things mentioned in conference they put a piece of candy on the item.  When all boxes are covered then they can eat the candy.  If you would rather not use candy, you can make some spacers out of paper.

Teacher Handout: You are a piece to the puzzle

Since, it is the fifth Sunday this month we are actually going to have the privileged of our full time missionaries in our area teach our sharing time.  I am so excited.  So, today's post I thought I would post a fun handout we gave to our primary teachers.

I do not know where the quote on it came from.  My mom had actually receive the sang on a handout she had received once.  For our teachers, I printed these on colored card stock and then glued one piece of the puzzle on to the paper inside of the puzzle piece outline with hot glue.

Halloween Craft #5- Halloween Luminaries from recycled jars

This is a craft I actually did with the 8-9 year old girls in activity days when I was their leader.  We made them for the table decorations from the Father and Daughter dinner we were having.  They are a great one to make with kids.

What is needed:

- A Clean jar (As you can see any size will work.  I've used baby food jars, Queso Jars, Spaghetti jars, jam jars, etc.)

-tissue paper (white for mummies and ghosts, orange for pumpkin and yellow, orange and white for candy corn.  Black for eyes)

- Ribbon, or jute to embellish with

-Mod podge

-Paint

-Paint brushes

What to do:

Cut your tissue paper into strips.  Brush on a layer of mod podge onto the out side of your jar.  Then start placing on the tissue paper.  The mummy you randomly place it on in all kids of directions.  The candy corn goes on horizontal and the pumpkin and ghost you put on horizontally.  Brush a thin layer of mod podge on top on the tissue paper once it is on the jar.  And add any eyes, mouths, etc.  Next you need to paint the top part of the jar, this is usually where the lid would close onto.  You could also use tissue paper here instead.  Finish off by adding jute or ribbon to the top.  Then place a candle in the jar.  We used tea light candles at the party. But for these ones I decorate with at home, I put an fake candle in.  It works just as good,  and there is no flame.

Take Care Tuesday- Getting Organized Week #4: Pantry Lists

My pantry is a disaster right now.  There was a time when I had a list of everything I had.  I decided it is time to get back to those days.  So, I created "The Pantry & More" list.  See the free printable below.

Here's the Plan:

Go through the kitchen and food storage area and right down all food items, the size of the package (lbs, oz, etc), How many you estimate you use in a year, How many you currently have, and How many you need to purchase.

At the same time, clean out the old and straiten up.

I also like to write the expiration day on the top of my cans with a sharpie marker, so I can actually see when then expire.

A good tip, as things get close to there expiration date, use them or donate them to a food drive.

Shop the sales.  (I recently read an article about shopping the sales.  I wish I could remember where I saw it.  Anyways, the just of it was that most stores run sales on a particular item every 4 to 6 weeks.  So, the plan is to decide how many of that item you will use in that time frame and then when it goes on sale buy that many of the item.  Then you will have enough to get you by until the sale on that item is on again.)

Buy what you will use!!!  I hate nothing more than to go to my pantry and see things that have expired, because I do not use them.  Then I have the remorse of throwing them away and seeing my dollars go to the garbage can.

I am planning on hanging this in my pantry where I will have easy access to it.  Another thought I just had was, after I have written my food items in I think I am going to either put it in a sheet protector, frame or laminate it. Then I can use a dry erase marker for the quantities so I am not having to print a bunch of these out as numbers change.

And behold, also the plates of Nephi, which contain the records and the sayings of our fathers from the time they left Jerusalem until now, and they are true; and we can know of their surety because we have them before our eyes.

 7 And now, my sons, I would that ye should remember to search them diligently, that ye may profit thereby; and I would that ye should keep the commandments of God, that ye may prosper in the land according to the promises which the Lord made unto our fathers."

Lesson:

Read: "The Bad Movie" by Julia Woodbury  

Discuss with your family what was the girl concerned about?  What did she do about her problem? (Emphasize that she prayed for help.  Discuss that we can also pray if we are unsure if we should read or watch something.  If we have to question it, we probably shouldn't read or watch it.)

Show the poster: "Would Heavenly Father be pleased if I watched or read this?" (see free printable above)

Have each family member choose a card.  Take turns reading the card and deciding which on it should go under yes or no.  Have them put them under the correct heading. 

Read the section "Entertainment and Media" in the For Strength of Youth Pamphlet

Discuss why we should watch and read things that uplift you.  Also, discuss what will happen if we choose to watch and read things that are not pleasing to our Heavenly Father.

Bear testimonies on watching and reading things that will please our Heavenly Father.

If you would like conclude by watching one of the videos on "Mormon Messages" with your family.

Close with a Family Prayer.

What goes better with a movie then popcorn?  So tonight, pop some and enjoy it as you watch some uplifting videos.

Primary Sharing Time week 4 -When I Serve other, I Serve God - Free printable

It's that time of year again, when we are busy getting ready for the Primary's Sacrament Meeting program.  In our Primary this Sunday, we are using up most of the time practicing our music for the program. So, here is just a little idea for a sharing time.  

Begin, by handing out a paper to each child.  See handout above (cut in half and give to children).  Have the children say, "When I serve others, I serve God", all together.  Then ask them to think of people that they might be able to serve and then think of specific ways of how they can serve that person.  Give each child, crayons or pencils and ask them to draw or write about how they can serve somebody else.  When they are finished, ask a few children if they could share what they drew or wrote.  Ask them to take these papers home and share them with their family. Also, ask them throughout the week to serve at least one person. Follow-up next week.

This could also be done for a FHE. 

Halloween Craft #4- 2x4 Frankie

Today's Halloween craft is one I did a few years back. He is super cute, super easy and lets face it pretty inexpensive to make.

Here is Frankie, my 2x4 creation.

What you need:

- A 2x4 cut to about 4-5 inches in length

- 2 screws & a screw driver

-Craft Paint (2 different colors of green, white, brown and black)

-Paint Brushes

-Sand paper

-Beauty sponge and black or brown ink

-Clear Coat Spray

How to make a Frankie Creation:

Cut your 2x4. Then you will need to sand it.  I don't worry about getting it too smooth. Next, paint the entire block the lighter color of green. When it is dry. Use a paint brush and some black paint and paint on the hair. I just randomly made some jaggedy hair lines. In the back the hair line is a little lower, basically even with how far down the sides are. Next, use the darker green and a thin paint brush and pain on the eye brow line. It is basically midway of the block and goes from one side to the other with a slight curve. Now, outline the eyes with black paint and a thin brush. Fill in the eyes with white paint. Then, make the pupils with black paint and use the end of the paint brush and make a dot in each with white paint.  Now it is time for the nose.  Use the darker green paint.  Make a squiggly mouth with black paint, dotting the ends.  Give him some stitches with some brown paint up on his forehead.  Now just rough him  up a little bit with the beauty sponge dipped in the ink, around the edges.  Time to give him his bolts- Just screw the screw in on each side.  If you are having a hard time with it, you could pre-drill some holes with a drill and then screw them in.  Another tip is you can rub the screw on a bar of soap before you start to screw it in this is supposed to make it go in easier. Try to make them the same distance up from the bottom.  Spray him with a clear coat, let him dry and then enjoy!

Take Care Tuesday- Getting Organized Week #3- Kid Chores Door Hanger free printable

Organization not only includes our schedule, but also helping our kids organize theirs.  I find myself getting my kids out the door for school and starting my day of chores and finding they haven't made their beds.  Then, comes my dilemma, do I make it for them, so my house can be clean, or do I wait for them to come home and have them do it then?  I really want them to be able to do their own chores, so I decided to come up with a little door hanger chart for them.  It has their morning chores. Things they need to get done before leaving for school. And then it has their evening chores.  Things they need to accomplish once they come home.  I am hoping that it will help them become more responsible of the things I have asked them to do as part of our family.  When everyone does their responsibilities then the home can run smoother, be more organized and be a happier place to be.

There are two printables.  The first one has what I am planning on hanging on my children's doors. I am printing them off on card stock and then laminating them.  (note: cut on the dotted line and then cut the circle out.)  They can either use an erasable marker to mark off their chores as they accomplish them or I might give them some stickers that they can put on them.  With it being laminated I should be able to remove the stickers each day. I'll have to post later what I find works best. My children have weekly chores that I have them do. They correlate with the chores I do on each specific day.  On Saturday, I am planning on having a jar with a bunch of different things that need to get done.  They can pick a chore out of the jar and that will be their chore that day.  The second printable is blank that you could add your own chores to.  Let me know if you use these and how they work.  I will also post how it goes with my kiddos.

Welcome everyone to Family Night

Sing: "The Lord Gave Me A Temple" pg 153  Children's Songbook

Have a member of the family member say the prayer

Discuss any family business

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 "16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

 17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

Lesson: Read: "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" by Laurie Walker in the November 2009 New Era Magazine

Have everyone stand up and place their hands on their head, then shoulders, then knees and then toes. Ask them if they feel like they have passed the modesty test.  If not, discuss ways they can change their wardrobe so they will.

Discuss ways as a family that we can make sure we dress modestly.  Maybe when we purchase clothing we can do the head, shoulders, knees, and toes experiment ourselves.  

Read:  "Modesty" Emphasizing that our bodies are sacred, because they are God's creations. 

Pass around a mirror to each family member. Have them look at the mirror have them think in their mind: I am a daughter/son of my Heavenly Father. He has made my body in his image. It is the temple of my spirit.

Read:  "Remembering Modesty" found in the April 2012 Friend Magazine. Discuss the guidelines we have been asked to follow to dress modesty. 

Give each family member the modesty reminder handout.

Bear testimonies on dressing modestly to show respect to Heavenly Father and ourselves. (May even discuss here how dressing modestly prepares us to enter the Lords temple.)

Close with a Family Prayer.

Yummy Mashmallow treats

Choose your families favorite kind of cereal. 

In a microwave safe bowl, combine 1 (10 oz) package of Marshmallows and 3 tablespoons of butter. Heat in microwave on high for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth.  Now, add in your 6 cups of your favorite cereal. Stir until cereal is coated well.  Press into a 13x9 inch pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray.  Cool and cut into squares.  

September Sharing Time 2013 Week 3 or 4- When I serve others, I serve God.

Outline for Sharing Time: When I serve other, I serve God.

Cut out all of the words of the printable. Place them on the board in order.  Have the children repeat it.  Then take away a word and have the children say it.  Keep removing a word until the words are all gone and the children can say it without any words on the board.

Use the hand printable. Cut the hands out, cut out the word pieces and put them on the hands.  Each word is written twice.  One goes on the back of the left hand, one goes on the back of the right hand. Place the hands with the color side up and the word side facing the board.  Explain to the children that on the hands are a name of someone we can serve. Have the children play a matching game. (Older kids can read names, younger kids you read the name and they can use the colors to help them match.) Once there is a match ask the child how they could serve that person.  Continue until all hands have been matched.

Bear your testimony on how when we serving others, we are also serving our Heavenly Father.

Take Care - Getting Organized Week 2- Free Printable to keep track of Bills

This week in getting organized I made this printable.

It is so much easier to keep track of what is owed and when it is due if it is written down.  On this printable there is a space at the top for what month the bills are due in. It then has a column where you can put where the bill is from, a column for the amount that is due, a column for what day it is due, a column for the day you paid it, a column for what method you used to pay it, and a column for any notes.

Nobody wants to be late for a payment and have to experience the fees and embarrassment that comes from missing the due date. It is stressful when you are not sure what day your payment is due and having to search through all of the paperwork.  When we get our bills organized then we will not have to worry about those things. As soon as you receive a bill write it's information down. It is so much easier to just have to refer to one sheet of paper. Our lives will flow just a little bit smoother with each part of our lives that we get organized.

Sing: "The Word of Wisdom" pg 154 Children's Songbook

Have a member of the family member say the prayer

Discuss any family business

Scripture:  D&C 89 (It may be good to read all verses, read how many will work for your family)

Lesson: Read: "Run Away!" from the Oct. 2010 friend

Discuss with your family why our bodies are sacred and why we should keep them pure. Ideas might be: Our body is the temple or home of our spirit. It is something that our Heavenly Father has given us. We should be modest when we wear our clothing to show respect to our bodies and our appreciation to our Heavenly Father for our bodies. 

Show them this picture for only 5 seconds, then put it away.  Ask each family member to close their eyes and describe the picture they had just seen.  Discuss as a family that even viewing an image for a short amount of time our minds still remember details of that image.

We should avoid looking at immodest pictures and things, to keep our mind pure.  Once we have seen an image it is very difficult to get that image out of our head.  The Holy Ghost can not dwell where there are unclean things. 

Read: "Cliff Hanger" from the Nov 1992 New Era

Discuss with you family what the guy in the story was blessed with, because he kept the Word of Wisdom.  Explain that we should not allow harmful things into our bodies.  Discuss some harmful things we should avoid. (see "Word of Wisdom" on Lds.org). What are we promised when we obey the Word of Wisdom? 

“All saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;

“And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;

“And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.

“And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them” (D&C 89:18-21).

Make the decision NOW! So, when you are faced with seeing an inappropriate photo or are offered something harmful to your body you will have already had made the decision to not view the photo or partake of the harmful thing.

Have each family member read the Promise card and make the commitment to keep their mind and body sacred and pure, and not partake of things that are harmful to them.  Then have each family member sign and date the card. Help younger children do this. Have them keep the card in a spot that will remind them of their decision and promise.

Bear testimonies on keeping our minds and bodies sacred and pure and not partaking of things that are harmful to us.

Close with a Family Prayer.

Treat option:

Healthy Fruit Kabob

Have either kabob sticks or tooth picks on hand.

Have an array of fruit (grapes, sliced strawberries, pineapple, melons, etc.)

Let each family member make their own fruit kabob.

September 2013 Week 2 Sharing Time: Prophets and Apostles Show us How to Serve

I had to make the decision not to do my Thrifty Thursdays anymore.  I would like to post my sharing time ideas on Thursdays and it is too hard to get both posts in.  A lot of my crafts I do I think are considered thrifty, so I will still be posting them on Wednesdays.  

September 2013 Week 2 Sharing Time: Prophets and Apostles Show us How to Serve.

For this weeks sharing time, the children's song, "Follow the Prophet" came to my mind. I thought that using the song would be a wonderful way to teach the subject. Here is an outline using the song (If you click on the prophet's name I have made links to their pictures. If you click on the scripture it will take you to that scripture):

Gather pictures of:

Moses: Exodus 2:16-17  (Moses helped the daughters of Midian)

Noah: Genesis 6:22 (Built an ark and served the Lord by doing as he asked)

President Monson: Sept 1994 Ensign pg 12-17 (Read what his friend John Burt said of Pres. Monson and providing service to the widows.)

Joseph Smith: D & C 135:3 

(Sing the last verse for both President Monson and Joseph Smith)

Here is a Link to "Follow the Prophet".

On the back of the picture put a blank piece of paper.  Different colors of paper would be fun.

Place on the board "Prophets and Apostles Show us How to Serve" you can use the free printable or write it with chalk.

Place each picture on the board so the side with the picture can't be seen.  Choose one of the primary children to come and pick a picture off the board.  See if any of the children know who the prophet is in the picture.  If no one knows tell them.  Then have the primary children sing the verse of "Follow the Prophet", that correlates with that prophet.  Read the scripture that goes with that prophet and ask the children how the prophet has shown us how to serve.  Then have another primary child come up and pick another picture.  Repeating the above steps.  Until all pictures are uncovered.  Explain that Heavenly Father has given us prophets to help guide us to do things that will lead us back to him.  One of those things is to serve others.  We have had and currently have wonderful prophets that have been amazing examples of service to us.  In closing bear your testimony on following the prophets example and provide service.

Halloween Craft- 2X4 mummies

Last Wednesday, I posted a 2x4 spider craft for Halloween/fall.  So, an idea came to mind that every Wednesday until Halloween I am going to post different Halloween or Fall crafts I've done.  So by the time Halloween comes there should be 9-10 different crafts.

Today, I choose one of my favorites.  They are these cute little mummies made from 2x4's.

Here is what you need:

2x4 cut to the length you'd like, I think mine were probably 4- 5 inches long.

Gauze (I used this really neat gauze stuff that was really wide, it had been used for cleaning at a business,  but any roll of gauze should work)

Scrap fall colored material

jute

button

distressing ink (brown) you could just use brown ink.  

Foam makeup sponge

paint brushes

paint (flesh tone, pink, black, white)

Sand paper

Hot glue gun, with hot glue sticks

Clear coat spray

What to do:

Cut the 2x4 to the length you desire.

Sand (I don't worry about sanding too much because most of it is covered by gauze)

Paint the whole block the flesh tone

Allow paint to dry

Secure a piece of the gauze on the back of the block and then just start wrapping and twisting the gauze around the sides and top and bottom of the block, leaving an opening for the face to be painted on. Finish off by securing the end of the gauze to the back with hot glue.

Use the foam makeup sponge to distress the gauze with some brown ink.

Using the end of a paint brush, dip it into some black ink and dot the eyes onto the face area.

If you could like you could add some smaller dots into the black dots (ends of pins work great for doing this), or you could just leave them all black.

With a scruffy looking sponge (you could use an older brush and cut off some of the bristles) pounce it into some white and pink  paint.  Pounce it onto some newspaper or paper towel until there is not much ink on it.  Then you can use it to add the blush to the cheek. Pounce onto the cheek area of the block.

Cut your scrap material into rectangles and squares.  Glue them on with the glue gun, layering and staggering them on top of each other. Now you can add your button and some jute.

Finish off with some clear coat spray.

There you have it a super cute mummy decoration.

Take Care Tuesday- Organize your life

This is actually a post I really need.  Lately I have kind of been in a organization slump. At a time I was so organized.  My pantry was organized, my days were organized, my finances were organized, my home was more organized, my life was just more organized.  Life just seems to flow more smoothly and more gets accomplished with organization.  There is less time wasted and more time spent getting things done.  The Prophet Joseph Smith received reveltion on organization in the scriptures it says, "Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God” (D&C 88:119).  I found a little article that i found inspiring to read it clicck on this link, "Organize Yourselves".  So, here is what I have done in the past and am in the process of getting back into:

Welcome everyone to Family Night

Sing: "Families Can Be Together Forever" pg 300 Hymnal

Have a member of the family member say the prayer

Discuss any family business

Scripture:  Mosiah 13:20 "20 Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee."

Lesson: 
Read "The Family: A Proclamation to the World" (you might want to break it up into sections and have each family member that can read, read a part of it) ** After doing this with my young children, my advice would be not to read the whole thing, but to start at "Husband and Wife" and read until the end.

Explain that as a member of a family, you are part of a team.  In a team each member has a specific job.  If you were a point guard on a basketball team your job would be to control the ball for the offense and get the ball to the right players at the right time.  If you were the quarterback on a football team, your job would be to get the football into the en-zone, whether it be by throwing the ball, handing it off to someone else or running with the ball yourself.  If you were part of a dance team, your job would be to do the correct dance steps the best you could so the entire dance team looks good together.  In a family, each family member needs to do their part, so the family can be strengthened and happy. No matter what team you are a part of if each team member does their specific job the best they can then the team will be successful at their goal.

Give each family member a piece of paper and have them list some things that they can do individually to help strengthen their family and make a happy home. (doing this fulfills one of the "Faith In God" requirements)

Talk about these ideas and have each family member set a goal to do their part so the family can reach their goal of having a happy home.

Some ideas for parents might be: 

Preside: This means that Dad and Mom have the responsibility of giving direction to the family.

Preach The Gospel: Dad and Mom also get to teach their children the gospel. Helping each child understand the principles and doctrine and also that they are Heavenly Father's children. Family Home Evenings are a great time to do this.  Also, attending church meetings together and then talking about what each individual learned.

Be an Example: Parents can show their children how to keep Heavenly Father's commandments. And also show them how to repent of the mistakes they make themselves.

Provide: Parents have the sacred duty of providing for their children's spiritual and physical needs.

Some ideas for children might be:

Obey: Children can accomplish this by follow the rules the family decides on together.

Honor Parents: Children honor their parents when they show them respect.  When they do the things their parents have asked them to do.

Contribute:  Help out with household responsibilities.

Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Bites:

Warm chocolate chips up in a microwave safe cup in the microwave for 30 seconds, then stir, continue in 15 second intervals until chips are almost melted. Stirring after each interval.  Be careful to not cook too long.  Insert a toothpick, skewer or lollipop stick into a large marshmallow.  Dip marshmallow into the chocolate.  Coat entire marshmallow.  Then place either on wax paper or place stick into Styrofoam for the chocolate to dry.  Option: before it dries you can sprinkle with sprinkles, candy pieces, chopped nuts, or coconut.  Enjoy!
