Family Home Evening Outline for: I will only listen to music that is pleasing to Heavenly Father.

Welcome everyone to Family Night

Sing: "My Heavenly Father Loves Me" pg 228  Children's Songbook

Have a member of the family member say the prayer

Discuss any family business

Scripture: D&C 25:12 "12 For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads."

Discuss how we feel when we listen to the music sung during church.  Does it bring in the spirit?  Why do you think we sing a hymn before we partake of the sacrament?  It is because it prepares us for that sacred ordinance.  Music touches our souls in such a deep way.  We should only choose songs that will invite the spirit.

Have each family member choose their favorite hymn or primary song.  Then play the song.  You can find all hymns and primary songs at this link https://www.lds.org/music?lang=eng.

Discuss why these songs are their favorite songs and how they feel as they listen and sing them.

Another great idea would be to play, name that tune.  Play the prelude to the song and have family members guess what song it is.

When we sing the hymns and primary songs we are singing praises unto our Heavenly Father. We should sing them with love, praise and reverence.  I believe our Heavenly Father loves to hear us sing and that it doesn't matter to him if we are not the best singer. He wants to hear those praises.  Playing a musical instrument is also a way we can display our praise, love and gratitude to our Heavenly Father.
